Early in the morning on the Sunday of September 9, 1739, 20 slaves met in secret at the Stono River, in South Carolina. There they met and planned their freedom escape. Later that day they stormed into a store at Stono's bridge, stole the gunpowder and guns inside, killing the two storekeepers. The biggest pre-revolutionary war slave rebellion was finally armed. As the rebellion moved south they gained in numbers, until the slave owners and their men, totaling near 60 stopped and fought the now 100 blacks. About 20 whites died and two times as many blacks passed away. This revolt resulted in a stricter slave code.
