One of the first significant slave rebellions was in 1712 when about 25 slaves armed themselves and put the northern side of New York to fire. They killed nine whites, the first who responded to the uprising. Eventually the 18 slaves who survived were captured, and executed in a brutal manner. Some were even broken on the wheel, which is a form of torture in which a person is tied to the wheel of carriage or other heavy transportation and as the wheel turns the limbs of the person breaks.
